COMPANY FOUNDER L A HUGHES TO SERVE AS TOP CONSULTANT
TO TWO NEW 'GRASS ROOTS' ADR FIRMS
...Vision Helps Bring Mediation Back to Ground Level
L A Hughes & Associates principal/founder Linda Atkins Hughes' vision and consultation has helped spawn the development of the Center for Alternative Law & Mediation (CALM), an alternative dispute resolution venue designed for those who might otherwise not have access to ADR and mediation. At the same time, Hughes is reviving H&A sister company Peaceful Harbour, which specializes in family matters such as relationships, eldercare and estate settlements.
"I saw a real need for for a program to reach the average individual that H&A doesn't serve. H&A reaches out to organizations, corporations and government entities and CALM answers the needs of the little guy," Hughes said.
Working with local community networks and coalitions to establish the not-for-profit public service firm known as CALM. Hughes will serve as consultant to the nonprofit which specializes in 'community' problems including landlord-tenant and consumer-merchant mediations as well as document review and assistance. H&A Associate Joseph Maizlish will co-consult on the project.
Operating on a sliding scale fee basis, CALM will provide dispute resolution services and training to prospective volunteers, to the consumer, and to underserved communities. Peaceful Harbor will also provide service on a sliding scale basis to a different demographic and subject matter.

L A Hughes & Associates As Advisor to New Program
March 2012
The Tapestry Commission for the City of Lancaster, CA has asked L A Hughes & Associates principal Linda A. Hughes to assist in establishing a viable neighbor-neighbor mediation service to be made available to city residents who come in contact with the city's public safety division or sheriff department as a result of complaints and/or ordinance violations.
After a feasibility presentation given to the commission late last year, Hughes was asked to come back to help design and facilitate service delivery options as well as provide the initial training to volunteer mediators. The purpose of the training is to ensure uniform mediation style and technique and orient prospective volunteers concerning ethics and program procedures. The program prohibits the use of directive and/or evaluative styles, favoring facilitative and/or transformational approaches to ensure the principal of self-determination.
The initial orientation worshop which took place March 6, 2012 was complated by 5 of the city's 8 commissioners, a lead staff member, and 9 other local mediators and students.
